For the Judeo-Christian culture, the ideal woman is an asexual, submissive mother —Mary—, while Lilith and Eve epitomize the rebellious, seductive, transgressive prototype. During the Romantic period, this polarization is renewed: pure and idealized women still appear, but there are many femmes fatales that, guided by instinct, use their sexuality to dominate the male. Iwasaki uses Romantic elements such as attraction to death and desperate love, combining them with literary, cinematic and musical influences, lavishly garnished with irony and eroticism. The result is a cocktail in which female archetypes retain their basic features whilst acquiring a much more multifaceted and contemporary dimension. |
