Abandonó Egipto en 1957 durante la crisis del canal de Suez. Naturalizado francés en 1967 siempre se consideró a sí mismo como un extraño, por exiliado, por judío, por escribir en lengua francesa. Estas condiciones marcaron a tal grado su obra que lo volvió un caso único dentro de la literatura francesa general. Creó un género propio difícil de clasificar que atrajo la atención de Jacques Derrida y de Emmanuel Lévinas sobre el sentido de las letras y las palabras. Su forma de escribir se salta barreras y cae en una delirante fragmentación poética y reflexiva, no exenta de elementos autobiográficos, a los que agrega voces proféticas y místicas de carácter apócrifo, diarios inventados, parábolas, diálogos y toda clase de escritura por alusión, en ocasiones con sintaxis alterada. Se vale de la memoria como recurso del exilio para crear un terreno firme en el cual desarrollar su obra. |
