This article shows an empirical research on the grammatical construction of knowledge in 86 students of primary education in Catalonia. In particular, it explores what students know about the three basic tenses–past, present and future– from an oral situation in which, in pairs, they reflect on the tenses forms that appear in different sentences. The research highlights the fragility of students’ grammatical knowledge, who use automatic routines in order to solve linguistic tasks. It corroborates that school simplify grammatical contents, which are taught in a morphological way, to the detriment of semantic, syntactic and pragmatic criteria. These results confirm the need of rethinking the teaching of verb tenses in Primary Education, not only contents but also methodologies. To conclude, we consider that pedagogical grammar is the best approach to connect grammar knowledge and language usages.
