Throughout the course of the Fifties Giacomo Manzù’s work has been considered by Italian critics on the basis of its summary connection with sacred art domain. This exclusive but partial interpretation brought a general lack of interest in Manzù’s non-sacred outcome and was the primary reason of his sculptured oeuvres critical misfortune. The neglectfulness of Italian critics for the stylistic development of the artist’s bronzes contrasts with critical credit Manzù simultaneously had in England, where he rapidly became one of the most appreciated modern Italian sculptors. This paper, which represents a supplement to my previous studies on Manzù and British Art, focuses on the European context in which the Italian artist was developing a new style, spreading light on his experimental approach to Realism and Abstraction. These new reflections, added to my previous ones, represent a profitable opportunity to deconstruct the traditional approach to the artist’s work, ascribing it to the contemporary artistic trends in Europe. |
