Obras Métricas (1665) by Francisco Manuel de Melo and Fuente de Aganipe o Rimas Varias (1644) by Manuel de Faria e Sousa are two of the most ambitious single-author editions of lyric poetry from the 17th century in the Iberian Peninsula. In this paper, we propose a systematic study of textual strategies, paratextual devices or iconic content of these two works. These poetry anthologies and other relevant works (e.g.Melo’s Hospital das Letras or Faria e Sousa’s commentaries on the work of Camões) allow us to better understand the author’s position within the literary field, in a context of profound transformations in the print market. Of special interest for us is also the analysis of autobiographical texts and those which contribute to the formation of a renewed respublica literaria as we can see in Melo’s work, especially when he articulates the respect for the institutionalized canon with the desire to promote a larger public interest for contemporary authors.
