Given the fact that in most tertiary institutions assessment is an unavoidable reality, often with significant workload implications, the process can at times be simply reduced to devising the most efficient strategy to allocate grades to students. If we think of non-university adult learners (ie, continuous training), assessment practices pose a concern as for how to companies need to certify employees or test their skills and knowledge. Web-based testing appears as a cost-effective and efficient method in comparison to traditional written tests. This paper deals with the need for critical reflection on our own’s assessment practices and the values that underpin them, and the opportunities that Internet-based learning offer us to do so. In addition, some practical applications are described in order to illustrate how best practices in learning with new technologies can be enhanced by best practices in assessment.
