In these last months we have seen an increasing number of people seeking refuge in the European Union. To address this crisis the European Union has spent years developing the Common European Asylum System (CEAS), a prime necessity after removing internal borders and establishing the principle of freedom of movement within the European Union. This has resulted in the establishment of a clear distinction between citizens of member states and the so-called “third-country nationals”. With the approval of the Lisbon Treaty, asylum policy has improved regarding two main factors, that is, institutional changes in this area have strengthened the role of refugees and also the judicial procedure for asylum.
