House of cards: el continente Eames en una baraja de cartas

Abstract

Los juguetes despiertan a menudo el interés de los arquitectos. Numerosos autores reconocidos los han empleado en diferentes momentos de la historia para expresar de forma sintética un determinado ideario arquitectónico, por lo que su análisis desde la actualidad permite comprender fácilmente el contexto del que surgieron. Charles y Ray Eames encabezan la lista de arquitectos fascinados por los juguetes: los coleccionaban, los exhibían y también los diseñaban para producirlos en serie. Uno de los juguetes más innovadores y comercialmente exitosos que crearon fue la House of Cards: una baraja de cartas impresas con motivos gráficos o fotografías que se encajaban entre sí mediante seis ranuras para conformar varias estructuras tridimensionales. El pequeño objeto condensa conceptos presentes en todo su trabajo: el juego como objeto y como metodología, el cambio de escala y el proceso de trabajo concatenado, lo individual en lo seriado, la importancia de lo cotidiano, de la colección y de la fotografía, el uso de la imagen múltiple, el origen de la obra como regalo, la celebración permanente y la conexión de la vida con el arte.

El artículo se propone así desarrollar los rasgos más característicos de la obra de los Eames a través de este atractivo objeto, mostrar su influencia en otros autores y obras, y rescatarlo de su extenso legado como método creativo y laboratorio de experimentación para futuras arquitecturas.

Toys often arouse the interest of architects. Many recognized authors have used them at different times in history to express in a synthetic way a certain architectural ideology, so its analysis from the present allows us to easily understand the context from which it emerged. Charles and Ray Eames top the list of architects fascinated by toys: they collected them, exhibited them, and also designed them to produce them in series. One of the most innovative and commercially successful toys they created was the House of Cards: a deck of playing cards, printed with graphic motifs or photographs, that fit together with six slots to form several three-dimensional structures. The small object condenses concepts present in all their work: the game, as object and as methodology, the change of scale and the process of concatenated work, the particular in the mass produced, the importance of the everyday, of the collection and photography, the use of the multiple image, the origin of the work as a gift, the permanent celebration, and the connection of life with art.

The article aims to develop the most characteristic features of the Eames’ work through this attractive object, showing its influence on other authors and works, and rescuing it from their extensive legacy as a creative method and experimentation laboratory for future architecture.
