El despertar de los cabildos chilenos a fines del siglo XVIII

Abstract

Este artículo estudia en el Chile tardo colonial el proceso que ha sido llamado por la historiografía mexicana como el “despertar de los cabildos” impulsado por la Corona a fines del siglo XVIII. Proponemos que en el caso chileno este proceso implicó poner fin a las suspensiones de los cabildos y establecerlos en las villas que no los tenían. Tres factores coadyuvaron a estos fines: el restablecimiento de cabildos, la iniciativa de la Real Hacienda de sacar a remate los oficios y la reactivación de la confirmación real.

This article studies the process of the 'awakening of the cabildos' (as the Mexican historiography named it) promoted by the Crown, in Chile at the end of the eighteenth century. This paper proposes that in the Chilean case, this process implied the end of the suspension of the cabildos, and the establishment of new ones in the villas that lacked them. Three factors contributed to this purpose: the reestablishment of cabildos, the Real Hacienda's iniciative of auctioning the seats of the cabildos, and the reactivation of their royal confirmation.
