La reconstrucción de una protolengua debe verse avalada por la constatación tipológica de su verosimilitud lingüística. En el caso del indoeuropeo, la aplicación optimista de criterios lingüísticos abstractos por parte de los neogramáticos y de los estructuralistas trajo como consecuencia la creación de una protolengua cuyos únicos modelos tipológicos eran ciertas lenguas caucásicas o amerindias muy atípicas en su comportamiento. En este trabajo analizamos problemas en la reconstrucción del sistema fonético indoeuropeo fruto de tales desviaciones: la teoría de la vocal única, la naturaleza de las laringales, la llamada teoría glotálica y las recientes ideas de Pulleyblank (JIES 21 [1993] 63-117) sobre la prehistoria y tipología del sistema de oclusivas indoeuropeas. |
