Enjuiciar a Galdós sin haberlo leído: de Benet a Vargas Llosa. Desprestigio y reivindicación de su obra

Abstract

Desde los años 60 y 70 a nuestro presente, la obra de Galdós ha conocido valoraciones encontradas y servido para un debate sobre la novela que tiende a identificar al escritor canario con un determinado modelo narrativo: el asociado a los usos trasnochados del realismo decimonónico más costumbrista. En relación con ello, las invectivas contra Galdós se han concentrado generalmente en tres puntos: la reducción de su figura a cronista de la realidad de su tiempo, la malinterpretación de su uso del estilo indirecto libre y la ignorancia de su lúcida experimentación sobre los límites del realismo. Las mismas censuras que se le hacen demuestran tanto el desconocimiento de su obra como de los estudios especializados en ella, según han hecho evidente los debates habidos en el reciente centenario o el desinformado ensayo de Vargas Llosa, La mirada quieta. Por ello, se concluye con algunas propuestas de actuación para difundir la investigación galdosista más allá del ámbito académico universitario y reivindicar a Galdós desde el conocimiento real de su figura y obra.

From the 1960s and 1970s to the present day, the work of Galdós has been the subject of conflicting evaluations and a debate on the novel that tends to project on the Canarian writer the representation of a certain narrative model, one associated with the most outdated practices of “local color” nineteenth century realism. In relation to this, the invectives against Galdós have generally focused on three points: the reduction of his figure to a mere chronicler of the reality of his time, the misinterpretation of his use of free indirect style, and the ignorance of his lucid experimentation on the limits of realism. The very accusations that are made against him demonstrate both the lack of knowledge of his work and of the specialized studies on it, as has been made evident in the debates that took place during the recent centenary celebrations or in Vargas Llosa's uninformed essay, La mirada quieta (The Still Gaze). Therefore, we conclude with some proposals for action to disseminate research on Galdós beyond the academic university environment and to vindicate Galdós from a real knowledge of his figure and work.
