The ocular surface is exposed to the external environment, making it susceptible to colonization and alteration of the ocular microbiota by harmful and opportunistic pathogens, which can increase the risk of ocular infections. Ocular pathologies have often been treated with antibiotic therapy, but the excessive use of these drugs is leading to the emergence of bacterial strains that are resistant to them. To prevent antibiotic resistance, the current approach involves the use of antiseptic solutions as a prophylactic method in the treatment of ocular infections. These antiseptics are biocides that inhibit the growth of microorganisms and have selective action, making it less likely for microorganisms to develop resistance. The objective of this systematic review was to evaluate the antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory actions, among others, of different antiseptics used in the field of ophthalmology, such as povidone-iodine, chlorhexidine, hypochlorous acid, ozonized oil, etc. The aim was to enhance their use as prophylactic treatment for ocular infections. A literature search was conducted in various databases (Scopus, PubMed, Wos, and CINAHL) between February and May 2023. A total of 1160 different articles were found, of which 14 articles were finally included. All these articles are studies or clinical trials conducted between 2019 and 2023. They assess the efficacy of these antiseptics against microorganisms and compare their action to that of eye drops containing antibiotics. This review showed that the use of non-antibiotic eye drops has increased as prophylaxis before and after surgery, as well as an adjuvant in bacterial, fungal, and viral ocular pathologies. |
