The paper is an introduction to Newton’s theological and alchemical ideas, an aspect of his life that is perhaps less well known, but which was even more important to him than his dedication to what we now call science. ... The paper is an introduction to Newton’s theological and alchemical ideas, an aspect of his life that is perhaps less well known, but which was even more important to him than his dedication to what we now call science. After a brief personal sketch, it explains why theology was his basic interest from the beginning of his career and how the natural philosophy he elaborated was at the service of his piety as a believer. After some considerations on the Newtonian method, which we can call the epistemology of risk, his ideas on alchemy are introduced. The personalities and ways of working of Newton and Leibniz are then compared, and finally Newton’s idea of physical theology and his idea of God are briefly presented. |
