Abstract | El poliuretano es un polímero sintetizado por el ser humano que se caracteriza por su gran durabilidad y resistencia, lo que sumado a sus numerosas aplicaciones en productos de un solo uso y de corta vida útil suponen uno ... El poliuretano es un polímero sintetizado por el ser humano que se caracteriza por su gran durabilidad y resistencia, lo que sumado a sus numerosas aplicaciones en productos de un solo uso y de corta vida útil suponen uno de los problemas medioambientales a enfrentar en los próximos años. Los métodos para su reciclaje se limitan a la incineración y la acumulación en vertederos principalmente, lo que supone un problema medioambiental debido a la recalcitrancia característica del poliuretano, que llega en forma de micro y nanoplásticos a océanos e incluso la cadena alimentaria, encontrándose estos en tejidos de organismos por bioacumulación y llegando a alterar la microbiota intestinal con manifestaciones patológicas. Las técnicas de degradación convencionales, como son la degradación por medios físicos como el calor o la radiación UV (termooxidación, fotooxidación) o medios químicos (glicólisis, hidrólisis, oxidación, etc.) suponen un avance respecto a los medios anteriores de gestión de los residuos de poliuretano, si bien resultan insuficientes tanto por su limitada eficacia como por los compuestos contaminantes que se derivan de su aplicación, a parte de su escasa sostenibilidad. Es por eso que en la actualidad se pone el foco en desarrollar técnicas biotecnológicas, como la degradación biológica mediante enzimas hidrolíticas como las esterasas, lipasas y proteasas entre otras, la incubación del poliuretano con microorganismos como son bacterias (destacaron los géneros Pseudomonas y Corynebacterium) y especialmente hongos como Cladosporium y Aspergillus que demostraron una gran eficacia e incluso algunos insectos como las larvas de Tenebrio molitor, para un reciclaje o incluso la completa eliminación por mineralización de los residuos de formas cada vez más sostenibles. |
