Algunas representaciones de la pintura rupestre esquemática, numerosas figurillas neolíticas y calcolíticas de la Península Ibérica y varias máscaras fenicio-púnicas encontradas a lo largo de todo el Mediterráneo exhiben como característica común incisiones paralelas sobre los pómulos. Tradicional-mente, dichas marcas han sido interpretadas como tatuajes en el rostro o inserciones de varillas a la altura de la nariz. Frente a estas hipótesis se propone que estas líneas faciales podrían ser rasguños y laceraciones como símbolos de duelo ante la muerte. En apoyo de esta idea se analizan varias referencias textuales de diversas épocas, así como distintos elementos arqueológicos. |
