El estrés se puede definir de forma global como el conjunto de reacciones fisiológicas que preparan al organismo para dar respuesta a los distintos estímulos que lo originan. Actualmente, la mayoría de las personas y principalmente las procedentes de los países más desarrollados se encuentran muy familiarizadas con la palabra “estrés”, tanto que casi todas han dicho sufrirlo alguna vez a lo largo de su vida, siendo muy pocas las que lo asocian a una experiencia positiva, que nos mantiene activos y con capacidad para superarnos diariamente. El estrés, de forma generalizada en la población, suele relacionarse con situaciones desagradables como pueden ser la ansiedad, el miedo a lo desconocido y la incapacidad a la hora de afrontar nuevos retos. El ser humano, con el paso del tiempo y en respuesta a los distintos estímulos que han ido surgiendo, ha ido adaptando sus mecanismos fisiológicos de respuesta al estrés con el objetivo de asegurar la supervivencia de la especie. Sin embargo, la sociedad tan competitiva y compleja en la que vivimos ha hecho que las demandas ambientales sean cada vez mayores y superen la capacidad de respuesta del individuo, promoviendo un grado de estrés crónico que hará que lo que una vez fue una respuesta adaptativa y protectora del organismo, pase a ser la principal causante del daño y la vulnerabilidad del mismo. Es por eso que los objetivos de esta revisión se van a centrar en la recopilación de información acerca de los principales mecanismos y mediadores bioquímicos implicados en la inmunosupresión producida como consecuencia de la exposición crónica a estrés; así como los daños colaterales que esta situación de desbalance tendrá sobre los distintos componentes del sistema inmunitario en tres patologías específicas: la enfermedad de Alzheimer, el virus del herpes simple tipo 1 y la disbiosis intestinal. |
