Between March and July 1649, Seville was scourged by an epidemic disease –today it is known as bubonic plague. Authorities tried to mitigate the effects the best they could closing the city gates or preventing the external trade; doctors did also fight against the illness from their knowledge, but nothing kept Seville safe –many inhabitants died. We know this thanks to the information we get from relaciones de sucesos –as the Copiosa relación de lo sucedido en el tiempo que duró la epidemia en la grande y augustísima ciudad de Sevilla, año de 1649– or from the history of Seville compiled by Ortiz de Zúñiga. Despite all the efforts, Seville was terribly damaged and never again was the same. |
