Piedad y devoción: las artes suntuarias en los mecenas y misiones de baja California

Abstract

En 1697 se fundó Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó. Ese hecho marcó el inicio de las misiones jesuitas de Baja California y, por tanto, el comienzo del arte cristiano en la península. Así, la Compañía de Jesús apoyaría su labor evangelizadora con un amplio programa iconográfico y suntuario que ornamentaría sus iglesias. Un arte proveniente de diferentes lugares del virreinato, y financiado tanto por los ignacianos como por diversos donantes. Los jesuitas, y sus mecenas, pusieron todo el arte necesario al servicio de la evangelización, reforzando las devociones y el ornato suntuario en su beneficio. Así, todos los elementos artísticos no solamente tienen un motivo, sino que están relacionados entre sí para favorecer la obra de los misioneros.

On 25th October 1697, Nuestra Señora de Loreto Conchó was founded. This event set the beginning of Jesuits missions of Lower California, and therefore, the start of the Christian arts in this place. By this way, Society of Jesus support their evangelizing project with a broad iconographic program that would garnish their congregations, and which would come from different places of the viceroyalty. It was paid by the Society of Jesus and a variety of donors. Jesuits and their patrons, put all needed art to service of this evangelizing mission, reinforcing devotions and sumptuary decoration to their benefit. So, all this has led us to reinforce the idea that every artistic element has not just one a purpose, but they are connected between them to support the missionary work.
