Sismo en la periferia: vulnerabilidad frente al evento telúrico del año 1684 en Cumaná

Abstract

El presente artículo reconstruye y analiza el contexto sociohistórico dentro del cual se manifestó el sismo del 4 de mayo de 1684, develando las carencias que acompañaban la vida de los habitantes de Cumaná, ciudad nororiental del actual territorio venezolano. Carencias que construyeron la base material de condiciones de vulnerabilidad que, al articularse con el sismo, profundizaron la pobreza generalizada de un lugar periférico y desprovisto de atractivo para la Corona Española.

This article reconstructs and analyzes the socio-historical context within which the earthquake of May 4, 1684 took place, revealing the lacks that accompanied the life of the inhabitants of Cumana, a northeastern city of the current Venezuelan territory. Lacks that built the material basis of conditions of vulnerability that, when articulated with the earthquake, deepened the generalized poverty of a peripheral and unattractive place for the Spanish crown.
