Un huerfanito de leyenda. Crítica historiográfica sobre lo que nunca ocurrió con el sismo de Pamplona, Nueva Granada, en 1644

Abstract

El 16 de enero de 1644 tuvo lugar un terremoto que dañó severamente a Pamplona, en la Nueva Granada, así como a numerosos pueblos de la región. Sobre este hecho se han entretejido enredos historiográficos que condujeron a la creación de una leyenda sobre una devoción ya existente, la del Niño Huerfanito en esa ciudad, así como también se consolidaron datos científicos sobre efectos del temblor que jamás ocurrieron, como el caso del supuesto daño a Mérida, en la actual Venezuela. Este trabajo se propone revisar tales enredos y desarrollar una mirada crítica sobre el proceso que construyó estos equívocos y estableció una memoria colectiva en torno a sucesos inexistentes.

On January 16, 1644 there was an earthquake that severely damaged Pamplona, in New Granada, as well as numerous peoples of the region. About this fact, historiographic entanglements have been interwoven that led to the creation of a legend about an existing devotion, the Niño Huerfanito’s one in this city, as well as scientific data on the effects of the tremor that never occurred, like some damages in Mérida, in present territory of Venezuela. This paper aims to review such entanglements and develop a critical look on the process that built these mistakes and established a collective memory around non-existent events.
