dc.description.abstract | The inclusion of Twitter in the dynamics of communication of the political parties is a fact that has already
interested researchers such as Parmelee & Bichard (2011), (Shirky, 2011), Zurutuza (2012), Deltell, Claes & Osteso
(2013), Cebrián, Vázquez & Olabarrieta (2013) o Gelado & Bonete (2017). Although the repercussion of Twitter
on the way rulers and citizens may have not been as impactful as firstly thought, there is little doubt that many
politicians seen Twitter, to say the least, as an immediate window to convey their discourses to the citizenship.
Our research fits in this conceptual facet of the discourses of Spanish politicians and focuses specifically
on the analysis of thematic and rhetorical angles of the representation of a specially vulnerable group of
people, those who migrate to Europe, in general, and Spanish, in particular. In order to do so, we have
selected a sample of personal accounts of the most representative Spanish politicians in the Spanish public
sphere to elaborate a conceptual map of how –and how much– immigration appears in their discourses.
Our research goals are three: on the one hand, determining whether the dialectics on immigration focuses on
a generic treatment of the issue or descends on specific groups and individual stories; on the other, whteher
the rhetoric used associates the tweets that talk about immigration to positive, negative or neutral aspects;
and, lastly, related to the former, whether there are interpellations or not to the notion of the European Dream.
In order to complete our research, once the sample of politicians was defined, we have performed a content
analysis based on categories that has previously leaned on a computer-assisted analysis. For this previous
stage, we have used Nvivo 11 software, whose add-on NCapture allows to retrieve all the tweets available in
the API –generally 3200 per account. Nvivo’s word search tools have guided a first list of categories to analyse
that have led to the content analysis itself. In order to present the results we will both used analytic texts and
diagrams that will allow to elaborate conceptual maps through which the reader will have a visual summary of
the different discourses submitted to study. | es |
