When survival becomes politics: Necessity activism and identity work under precarity
(Wiley, 2026) Garcia-Lorenzo, Lucia; Sell Trujillo, Lucía; Donnelly, Paul; Psicología Social
Collective action is essential for tackling social, institutional, and environmental challenges, often fueled by shared identities, common norms, and a belief in the possibility of change. However, the impact of participating in collective action on individual identities, and how this knowledge can shape future efforts to maintain engagement and promote positive change, remains underexplored. This study uses a liminal and identity work approach to examine how precarious Spanish activists, involved in long-term struggles against precarity, develop and negotiate their identities as activists through protest participation. Based on a qualitative study spanning over 9 years, this research focuses on the experiences of activists from two collectives in Seville, Spain, that emerged in response to the Great Recession. Our findings introduce the concept of necessity activism to describe political engagement driven by survival needs rather than ideological commitment. We show how activists facing precarity undergo a three-phase identity transformation: forced separation, intensive identity work, and varied outcomes including burnout, withdrawal, or adaptive reengagement. This process highlights the emotional and material costs of activism and the ongoing reconstruction of activist identities under the liminal conditions created by precarity.

Liminal Entrepreneuring: The Creative Practices of Nascent Necessity Entrepreneurs
(Sage, 2017) Garcia-Lorenzo, Lucia; Donnelly, Paul; Sell Trujillo, Lucía; Imas, J. Miguel; Psicología Social
This paper contributes to creative entrepreneurship studies through exploring ‘liminal entrepreneuring’, i.e., the organization-creation entrepreneurial practices and narratives of individuals living in precarious conditions. Drawing on a processual approach to entrepreneurship and Turner’s liminality concept, we study the transition from un(der)employment to entrepreneurship of 50 nascent necessity entrepreneurs (NNEs) in Spain, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The paper asks how these agents develop creative entrepreneuring practices in their efforts to overcome their condition of ‘necessity’. The analysis shows how, in their everyday liminal entrepreneuring, NNEs disassemble their identities and social positions, experiment with new relationships and alternative visions of themselves, and (re)connect with entrepreneuring ideas and practices in a new way, using imagination and organization-creation practices to reconstruct both self and context in the process. The results question and expand the notion of entrepreneuring in times of socio-economic stress.

Expressing negative emotions and not feeling them improves effectiveness in solving disputes
(Sage, 2023) Medina Díaz, Francisco José; Sanclemente Ibáñez, Francisco José; Munduate Jaca, María Lourdes; Psicología Social; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España
Disputes have an extremely high negative emotional workload. Based on the approach of the Emotion as Social Information Model (EASI), we intend to demonstrate how expressing negative emotions plays a different role in solving a dispute than feeling negative emotions. The participants were 43 professional negotiators managing a dispute escalated by a confederate in three conflict levels during a chat interaction between a supervisor and a subordinate. The trained judges evaluated the negative emotions expressed, problem-solving behaviours and the effectiveness in solving disputes. As the main outcome, we demonstrate that expressing negative emotions increases problem-solving behaviour and effectiveness in solving a dispute, whereas feeling negative emotions (anger) decreases them. Additionally, our findings show that one mechanism which explains the effectiveness in solving disputes is the positive influence of expressing negative emotions on problem-solving behaviour. Practical and theoretical implications are discussed.

Team Affective Climate Toward Disability as a Facilitator of Job Inclusion of Employees With Disabilities: Examining Mediational Paths
(Wiley, 2025) Gamero Vázquez, Nuria; Sanclemente Ibáñez, Francisco José; Medina Díaz, Francisco José; Psicología Social; Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte (MECD). España; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU). España
The integration of employees with disabilities in the workplace is a critical issue for organizations aiming to foster inclusivity and diversity. The purpose of this study was to examine how team affective climate toward disability influences the job inclusion of employees with disabilities. Three indicators of job inclusion were considered: job satisfaction, affective commitment, and the desire to stay in the organization. We examined three mediating mechanisms. First, the mediating role of team-shared stigma. Second, the mediating role of the quality of within-team relationships. Third, a mixed meditational path, where team affective climate→team-shared stigma→relationships quality→job inclusion. The sample was composed of 258 employees from 66 teams included in 15 organizations. Each team included an employee with disabilities. We used PROCESS to test our mediation hypotheses. Our results indicated that the indirect effect of the teams' affective climate toward disability in job inclusion followed a causal chain through the teams' shared stigma and the quality of within-team relationships. Implications for theory, research, and practice based on our findings are discussed.

Spanish validation of the cardiac self-efficacy scale: a gender invariant measure
(Taylor & Francis, 2024) Arenas Moreno, Alicia; Cuadrado, Esther; Castillo Mayén, Rosario; Luque Salas, Bárbara; Rubio García, Sebastián J.; Gutiérrez Domingo, Tamara; Tabernero Urbieta, Carmen; Psicología Social; Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO). España; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España; Junta de Andalucía
The aim is to validate the Spanish version of the Cardiac Self-Efficacy (S-CSE) Scale by examining its psychometric properties and to test the invariance for women and men. Two groups − 722 and 522- of patients completed the S-CSE Scale and other psychosocial measures during a medical revision several months after being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease. Construct validity was psychometrically evaluated using exploratory factor analysis (EFA) with a split of the first sample and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) with a second split of the same sample. Scale structure was confirmed using the second sample. Convergent, discriminant, and external validity were tested. Results revealed that the S-CSE Scale was represented by three dimensions (control symptoms, control illness, maintain functioning) obtaining excellent reliability indexes and it appeared to be invariant for women and men. The S-CSE scale is a useful tool for monitoring the general well-being of these patients to promote individualized interventions.

Age and moral disgust: An experimental priming effects vignette study
(Public Library of Science (PLOS), 2025) Corradi, Guido; Aguilar Barriga, Pilar; Aguiar González, Fernando; Olivera-La Rosa, Antonio; Psicología Social
Disgust influences how people perceive and judge moral violations. Individuals who are more sensitive to disgust often judge such violations more harshly. This sensitivity may change depending on the context, like the age of the person committing the act. However, there’s limited and inconsistent evidence on how disgust sensitivity and feelings of disgust affect moral judgments toward older adults. This study aimed to find out if disgust sensitivity and induced feelings of disgust affect moral judgments differently based on the age of the person involved. Specifically, we examined whether people relate their disgust sensitivity differently when judging actions by young versus old individuals and whether showing disgusting images influences the harshness of moral judgments differently depending on the actor’s age. We conducted a preregistered experiment with 235 adult participants. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: “Old” or “Young.” They read 24 stories about moral violations committed by either old or young individuals. Before each story, participants were briefly shown an image that was either disgusting, sad, or neutral. They then rated the acceptability of the behavior on a scale. Participants also filled out questionnaires measuring their disgust sensitivity, attitudes toward age, and emotions toward young and old people. The findings showed that higher disgust sensitivity was linked to harsher moral judgments, regardless of the age of the person committing the violation. This means that how sensitive someone is to disgust affects their moral judgments in the same way for both young and old actors. However, when participants were shown disgusting images before reading about an older person committing a moral violation, they judged the behavior less harshly compared to when the actor was young. This effect was not seen with sad or neutral images. There was also no significant interaction between the type of image shown and the participant’s disgust sensitivity. The study suggests that disgust has a complex role in moral judgments. While personal sensitivity to disgust leads to harsher judgments no matter who is involved, feelings of disgust induced by images can influence judgments differently based on the age of the person committing the act.

Manifestations and Reinforcement of Heteronormativity in the Workplace: A Systematic Scoping Review
(Taylor & Francis, 2023) López Corlett, Sara; Di Marco, Donatella; Munduate Jaca, María Lourdes; Arenas Moreno, Alicia; Psicología Social
This scoping review systematizes the evidence available to date on the manifestations of heteronormativity in the workplace. The reviewed literature shows that, at an organizational level, heteronormativity is reproduced in the configuration of space, organizational policies, and the monitoring of their accomplishment by leaders. At an interpersonal level, employees interact with others based on heterosexual presumptions, they reward what is aligned with heteronormativity, and censor what is not. Finally, individuals acting of their own volition may perform their gender in ways that strengthen the presumption of heterosexuality and communicate heteronormativity alignment. This review offers suggestions for future research in the field of heteronormativity in the workplace and includes theoretical and practical implications for the creation of inclusive organizations.

Non-Heteronormative Sexual Orientations at Work: Disclosure Dynamics and the Negotiation of Boundaries between Lesbian and Gay Employees and Their Co-workers
(Taylor & Francis, 2024) Di Marco, Donatella; Hoel, Helge; Arenas Moreno, Alicia; Munduate Jaca, María Lourdes; Psicología Social
This article focuses on the interactional dynamics which take place during disclosure of non-heteronormative sexual orientations at work. Since the disclosure might be considered a process through which lesbian and gay (LG) people share information about their personal life at work, Boundary Theory, which explores how people create boundaries between life domains, allows us to better understand disclosure dynamics. For this purpose, 39 Spanish lesbian and gay employees were interviewed. The results demonstrated that LG employees and their coworkers, affected by the socio-cultural context, are jointly responsible for the integration/segmentation of LG employees' personal and work domains, thus questioning the extent to which management of non-heteronormative sexual orientations is considered a strategic choice under the control of LG employees alone.

Understanding the Impact of Personal Resources on Emotional Exhaustion Among Emergency Healthcare Workers: A Structural Equation Modeling Approach
(MDPI, 2025) Arenas Moreno, Alicia; Terán Tinedo, Valeria María; Cuadrado, Esther; Castillo Mayén, Rosario; Luque Salas, Bárbara; Tabernero Urbieta, Carmen; Psicología Social; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovacion y Universidades
Background/Objectives: The COVID-19 pandemic was associated with an increase in burnout vulnerability in healthcare workers, which often translated into higher potential risks for their personal safety and that of their patients. This study was based on the JD-R model and explored emotional exhaustion and stress, as a result of a lack of personal resources such as self-efficacy to cope with stress and poor emotion regulation, and work demands, with the buffering effect of a healthy lifestyle. Methods: The sample was composed of 189 emergency healthcare workers from Spain, aged between 26 and 59 years old. A cross-sectional and correlational study was carried out through an online platform. Results: The mediation, moderation, and Structural Equation Modeling analyses supported the proposed model, demonstrating good fit to the data. Work demands showed both a positive direct effect and an indirect effect on emotional exhaustion through emotion regulation and stress. In turn, self-efficacy to cope with stress and healthy lifestyle showed indirect effects on emotional exhaustion, also through emotion regulation and stress. Further, healthy lifestyle moderated the relationship between stress and emotional exhaustion, by mitigating the negative influence of stress on emotional exhaustion. Conclusions: The study highlights the importance of incorporating self-care in coping with stress and preventing burnout and should be considered when designing interventions in the context of emergency healthcare to improve well-being in its workers.

Port Transformation and Community Decline in a Fishing Neighborhood: The Case of El Varadero in the Port of Motril (Spain)
(MDPI, 2025) Maya Jariego, Isidro; Florido del Corral, David; Uchoa Dantas, Mateus Rafael; Psicología Social; Antropología Social; Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICIN). España
This study examines the evolving relationship between the Port of Motril and the adjacent fishing community of El Varadero. The reduction in fishing quotas and the port’s transformation into a maritime transport hub have not only reshaped the connection between the area and the port but have also contributed to the gradual decline of the local community. Through a community survey conducted among residents of the fishing neighborhood and the urban center (n = 65), we assessed community assets, psychological sense of community, and collective self-efficacy in this coastal area in southern Granada. The survey findings were supplemented with interviews with key informants from the local fishing sector (n = 5). The results indicate that residents of the fishing neighborhood perceive a higher prevalence of social problems and report a diminished sense of belonging. The community’s historical ties to the port have progressively weakened, exposing residents to ongoing socio-economic decline. This study explores the potential of fishing cultural heritage as a resource for local development and highlights the need for integrated governance between the fishing sector and the local authorities.

Identification of Compassion Fatigue Risk Profiles in Veterinarians: Implications for Prevention and Professional Well-Being
(MDPI, 2025) Cobos Sanchiz, David; León Pérez, José María; Cantero Sánchez, Francisco Javier; León Rubio, José María; Psicología Social
Compassion fatigue is a widely recognized phenomenon in human care settings, but it has been little explored in the veterinary field, despite sharing many of the same determinants. This study aimed to (1) identify distinct emotional risk profiles in veterinarians based on their levels of compassion fatigue and satisfaction; (2) estimate the relative prevalence of compassion fatigue in each of these profiles; and (3) analyze the predictive value of sociodemographic variables (gender, age, cohabitation) on belonging to these profiles. A cross-sectional study was conducted with 135 practising veterinarians. An abbreviated version of the ProQOL scale, adapted to the animal context, was used. Its two-dimensional structure (compassion fatigue and satisfaction) was validated using confirmatory factor analysis. Hierarchical cluster and k-means analyses were performed on the factor scores, which identified four emotional profiles: (1) intense emotional involvement, (2) emotional detachment, (3) functional distancing, and (4) high emotional risk. The latter grouped 23% of the sample, while 50.4% presented significant levels of emotional exhaustion. Finally, an ordinal regression was applied, which showed that being over 44 years of age (OR = 2.11) and living with a partner (OR = 1.94) increase perceived emotional risk, with no significant effects of gender. The findings highlight the need for training initiatives that enhance emotional regulation and communication with animal guardians or owners, while promoting sustainable, ethically responsible, and emotionally healthy professional practice.

The Mediating Role of Self-Esteem in the Relationship between Experiential Avoidance and Emotional Disorders in Community Mental Health Patients
(Cambridge University Press, 2025) Vázquez-Morejón Jiménez, Raquel; León Rubio, José María; Martín Rodríguez, Agustín; Vázquez Morejón, Antonio José; Psicología Social; Personalidad, Evaluación y Tratamiento Psicológicos
Given the growing global prevalence and significant impact of depression and anxiety, both in general and within the workplace, understanding the underlying mechanisms contributing to emotional disorders is essential. This study examined whether self-esteem mediates the relationship between experiential avoidance and emotional disorders, focusing on depression and anxiety. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis of 174 outpatients from a community mental health center, who completed self-report measures of experiential avoidance, self-esteem, depression, and anxiety. We used the PROCESS macro for mediation analysis, and the results indicated that self-esteem significantly mediated the relationship between experiential avoidance and both depression and anxiety. We analyzed the mediation model within the framework of self-determination theory, which suggested that interventions aimed at reducing experiential avoidance and enhancing self-esteem could be effective for emotional disorders. In this study, we highlight the importance of addressing both experiential avoidance and self-esteem in the therapeutic context. We also discuss implications for clinical practice and limitations of the current study.

Profiles of exposure to face-to-face and cyberbullying at work: A latent class analysis in Spain
(Elsevier, 2025) Cárdenas Miyar, Alfonso; Cantero Sánchez, Francisco Javier; León Rubio, José María; León Pérez, José María; Psicología Social; Junta de Andalucía; European Commission (EC). Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER)
This study investigates the co-occurrence of face-to-face bullying (FWB) and cyberbullying (CWB) in workplace settings. In doing so, we opted to use a person-centered approach with latent class analysis (LCA) to identify distinct patterns of bullying experiences rather than general prevalence rates. Using a panel survey design, participants reported the frequency of exposure to both FWB and CWB (n = 1995; Mage = 42; SDage = 9.23; 53.6 % women). A LCA conducted with the R statistical package poLCA revealed that a 5 cluster solution fits data best (BIC: 36163, AIC: 34461; Entropy: 0.917; G2 = 13779). These clusters can be classified into the following categories: (1) individuals not exposed to bullying behaviors at all (53.84 %); (2) those rarely exposed only to face-to-face bullying behaviors (28.76 %); (3) those rarely exposed to both cyber-and face-to-face bullying behaviors (3.84 %); (4) those exposed to face-to-face bullying behaviors (5.52 %); and (5) those exposed to both cyber-and face-to-face bullying behaviors (8.04 %). Therefore, most of the participants can be considered at low risk of bullying victimization (86.44 %, grouping clusters 1 to 3), whereas 13.56 % of the participants can be considered bullying targets (grouping clusters 4 and 5). Our results suggest that a significant proportion of individuals encounter FWB and CWB together, indicating a complex bullying landscape within workplaces. Thus, our findings underscore the importance of tailored organizational policies that consider the varied experiences of bullying to prevent them and foster a healthier work environment.

Overcoming barriers: a grounded theory of the experience of professionals working with justice-involved adolescents who use substances
(Springer, 2025) Herrera Sánchez, Isabel María; Rueda Méndez, Samuel; Luque Ribelles, Violeta; Psicología Social; Gobierno de España; Ministerio de Sanidad. España
Adolescents involved in the juvenile justice system are particularly vulnerable to the effects of psychoactive substance use. Various studies have explored interventions from the perspective of professionals who seek strategies to meet their specific needs. This study aims to develop a substantive theory based on the experiences of professionals working in outpatient treatment centres, using a convenience sample of 20 interdisciplinary professionals. Semi-structured interviews were conducted and analysed according to Grounded Theory, identifying a basic social psychological process termed ‘overcoming barriers’, which includes four categories: reflectivity, identifying emotions, influence, and redefining results. Additionally, a basic social structural process was identified, consisting of six categories: succession, normalization, diversification, interrelation, openness, and adaptation. Three stages were established to describe the sequence in which these processes progress. The discussion focuses on analysing substance use from an ecological perspective, considering the diversity of profiles of justice-involved adolescents and best practices in professional decision-making.

Advisor-Advisee Relationship and the Organizational Culture of Doctoral Programs on Doctoral Students’ Mental Health and Academic Performance: A Scoping Review Protocol
(Elsevier, 2025) Storti, Beatriz Cintra; Sinval, Jorge; Munro, Yasmin Lynda; Medina Díaz, Francisco José; Sticca, Marina Greghi; Psicología Social
Doctoral students’ mental health is increasingly recognized as a critical issue in academia, with advisor-advisee relationships playing a key role in both well-being and academic performance. The organizational culture of doctoral programs may also influence these outcomes, but existing literature has yet to fully addressed the interplay between these factors. This scoping review aims to identify elements within the advisor-advisee relationship and supervision process that are associated with doctoral students’ mental health and academic performance. It also seeks to examine how the organizational culture of doctoral programs relates to these dynamics. The review will include both empirical studies and literature reviews focusing on these relationships. The following databases will be searched: Medline (Ovid), Embase (Ovid), Cochrane Library, Web of Science, ERIC, PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCOhost), and PsycInfo (APA). Studies will be screened by two independent researchers, with duplicates removed. There will be no restrictions on publication date or language. Data extraction will be conducted using a standardized spreadsheet, and findings will be synthesized using thematic analysis, with results presented in both narrative form and summary tables.

European digital transformation for Roma girls’ health: the case of Spain
(Frontiers, 2025) Miranda Rojas, Daniela; Terán Tinedo, Valeria María; Borges Bento, João Henrique; de Jong, Tomas; de Frutos-Lucas, Jaisalmer; Psicología Social; Agencia Estatal de Investigación. España; Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICIU). España; European Union (UE); Junta de Andalucía; European Commission (EC); HUM873: Centro de Investigación y Acción Comunitaria de la Universidad de Sevilla
The digital experiences of Roma girls are shaped through the Digital Determinants of Health (DDoH) such as poor housing conditions with limited digital infrastructure, under-resourced public schools in marginalized neighborhoods, and dominant narratives that overlook their capacities and contributions. Although the European digital transformation advances rapidly, it often fails to address the enduring impacts of structural antigypsyism across DDoH. This article addresses the following questions: (1) how do European digital transformation efforts respond to the impacts of historical antigypsyism on Roma girls’ digital experiences? (2) What dynamics across societal, community, interpersonal, and individual levels shape the violation and protection of Roma girls’ digital rights in marginalized neighborhoods? and (3) How can European digital transformation policies be operationalized to support a shift from impoverished to meaningful digital participation for Roma girls across all levels of the digital ecosystem? To answer these, the study employs a triangulation approach integrating policy analysis of relevant European strategies on digitalization and Roma inclusion, field observations from ongoing participatory research, and a targeted literature review providing theoretical and comparative grounding. The triangulation of these sources supports the development of an analytical framework for Roma Girls’ Digital Rights that allows to map digital experiences through an ecological lens. By bridging policies with local realities, this paper provides actionable recommendations to operationalize macro-level policies with the everyday realities of Roma girls, ensuring that they can experience digitalization as a pathway to empowerment and as active contributors to Europe’s digital future.
