A perspective that assumes a functional and dialectival relationship between scenarios of activiy, discourses, and thought types is here taken. A study was conducted to examine the influence of school level and generation in the making of concepts in participants from Matamoros, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Participants completed a task about making concepts on formal issues (their perceptions on the fact of living in the border). Results show that, in informal issues, there were no differences by school level either in the concepts elaborated or in the criteria chosen for argumentation. However, school level did influence the construction of concepts in formal aspects. Generation showed a pattern that is contrary to schooling. Similarities and differences between individual's performances were interpreted in terms of the Hypothesis of Verbal Thinking Heterogeneity developed by Tulviste.
