Pequeñas propuestas para dos ciudades

Abstract

El estudio de cuarenta ciudades de todo el mundo por los investigadores de Space Syntax ha permitido comprobar su funcionamiento ante el movimiento que las cruza, la selección de rutas alternativas desde un origen a un destino, la función de diagonales y atajos en su elección, así como la trascendencia que estos hechos tienen para un progresivo ajuste orgánico y las mejoras estructurales que implican. De ellas se tratan aquí dos (Santiago de Chile y Barcelona), porque muestran varias semejanzas: igual tamaño de manzana, cruces por pasajes interiores –más abundantes en otro tiempo- y propuestas de pequeñas diagonales nacidas de planes superpuestos en el tiempo, sobre todo entre 1860 y 1910, pero nunca realizados. Siguiendo tecnologías desarrolladas en la Escuela de Bartlett/ University College, Londres, indicadas en la bibliografía, se realiza un seguimiento de su evolución, así como una simulación de los efectos de dichos planes en la ciudad actual, que permiten percibir singularidades que no gozaron en su día de oportunidad al carecer el marco global de una conectividad que permitiese los intercambios más desarrollados de su evolución actual.

The study of forty cities from all the world enabled Space Syntax researchers to check an adequate performance for movement through them (integration), the selection of alternative routes from an origin to a destination, the function of little diagonals and shortcuts in their choice, as well as the transcendence of these facts for a progressive organic adjustment and the structural improvements they entail. Two of these cities are treated here (Santiago de Chile and Barcelona), owing to the similarities they show: equal size of insulae, crossings through internal passage-ways, more abundant years ago, and proposals of little diagonals born out of urban plans superimposed over time, mainly between 1860 and 1910, that were never totally implemented. With the aid of technologies developed at Bartlett/ University College, London, referred in the bibliography, its evolution is followed, as well as a simulation of the effects that such plans might have had in the city as it stands today, had they been accomplished, and that allow to perceive particular qualities that did not have an opportunity, since the overall frame could not offer sufficient connectivity to foster the more developed exchanges of its present state.
