Abstract | Cuando hablamos de supervivencia entre bacterias, uno de los mejores ejemplos es la bacteria del suelo Bacillus subtilis. Esta bacteria es capaz de hacer frente a situaciones extremas en cuanto a nutrientes y condiciones ... Cuando hablamos de supervivencia entre bacterias, uno de los mejores ejemplos es la bacteria del suelo Bacillus subtilis. Esta bacteria es capaz de hacer frente a situaciones extremas en cuanto a nutrientes y condiciones ambientales. Para ello, no solo guarda un as en la manga, como se suele decir, sino vario de ellos. Al frente de estos recursos se encuentran una serie de proteínas reguladoras. En este trabajo nos centraremos en la proteína Spo0A, que desempeña un papel regulador central. La proteína Spo0A es un regulador transcripcional que por sí sola no tiene función alguna, en cambio, una vez fosforilada se activa. La activación depende de las señales internas y externas recibidas que son integradas en un mecanismo de transferencia de fosfatos denominado “phosphorelay”, cuyo aceptor final es la proteína Spo0A quedando activada (Spo0A~P). Las señales detectadas aumentan progresivamente los niveles de Spo0A~P conforme las condiciones se vuelven más severas, a la vez que se van desbloqueando los recursos que B. subtilis guarda para su supervivencia. Al principio, cuando los niveles son bajos, se da la expresión de genes con alta afinidad, tales como los genes formadores de biopelículas o biofilms, y los genes que regulan el canibalismo. Más adelante, cuando la bacteria no puede sobrevivir con estas tácticas, tiene lugar un aumento abrupto en los niveles de la proteína fosforilada que desencadena la expresión de los genes que inician la esporulación. B. subtilis utiliza la esporulación como último recurso, por lo que su regulación debe estar estrictamente controlada, puesto que es un proceso muy costoso en tiempo y energía, y que una vez comienza, es irreversible, situando en una posición crítica a nuestra bacteria que se debate entre la vida y la muerte. |
