Recuperación del granito de Gerena como pavimento del casco histórico de Sevilla

Abstract

In recent years, a series of operations have been happening in the historic center of Seville in which - under the premise of improving sanitation and supply networks, and with the aim of making the streets more comfortable and accesible - replaced the existing pavement. It is the polychromatic granite cobblestone of Gerena the one being retired, little by little, in favor of the gray, smooth and straight cobblestone of Quintana de la Serena. Facing this situation, a question oughts to be asked: Why not reuse the cobblestones of Gerena? This issue is addressed under three perspectives: heritage, functionality and sustainability. The soil of the old cities is urban heritage, although the norm is not specific about them. To put them in value, the history of the pavements of Seville to this day is reviewed, culminating it with a current planimetry on the floors that line its center. In addition, two case studies that exemplify two forms of intervention are analyzed: reuse and replacement. The functional and technical characteristics of the paving are reviewed; together with the existing regulations. Finally, the Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) is introduced as a management and decision-making tool. Two scenarios are proposed: the reuse of Gerena’s cobblestone, taking into account the processes necessary to adapt it to current requirements; and its replacement by granite from Quintana. LCA is applied and the information obtained is used to evaluate the case studies, exemplifying its potential. The results show that the replacement of Gerena by Quintana has a significant greater impact on the environment than its reuse. The implementation of heritage, ecological and functional values urges to preserve the granite of Gerena in the streets of Seville.

En los últimos años, se han ido sucediendo una serie de operaciones en el casco histórico de Sevilla en las que - bajo la premisa de mejorar las redes de saneamiento y abastecimiento, y con el objetivo de hacer más cómodas y accesibles la calles - se ha sustituido el pavimento existente. Es el policromático adoquinado de granito de Gerena el que se está retirando, poco a poco, en favor del gris, liso y recto adoquín de Quintana de la Serena. Ante esta situación una pregunta ha de ser planteada: ¿Por qué no reutilizar los adoquines de Gerena? Esta cuestión se aborda bajo tres perspectivas: patrimonio, funcionalidad y sostenibilidad. El suelo de las ciudades antiguas es patrimonio urbano, aunque la norma no sea específica sobre ellos. Para ponerlos en valor, se repasa la historia de los pavimentos de Sevilla hasta nuestros días, culminándola con una planimetría actual sobre los suelos que revisten su centro. Además, se analizan dos casos de estudio que ejemplifican dos formas de intervención: la reposición y la sustitución. Se revisan las características funcionales y técnicas del adoquinado; y la normativa existente. Finalmente, se introduce como herramienta de gestión y toma de decisiones el Análisis de Ciclo de Vida (ACV). Se plantean dos escenarios: la reutilización del adoquín de Gerena, teniendo en cuenta los procesos necesarios para adaptarlo a las exigencias actuales; y su sustitución por granito de Quintana. Se aplica el ACV y se utiliza la información obtenida para evaluar los casos de estudio, ejemplificando su potencial. Los resultados muestran que la sustitución de Gerena por Quintana tiene un impacto significativamente mayor sobre el medio ambiente que su reutilización. La puesta en práctica de valores patrimoniales, ecológicos y funcionales insta a conservar el granito de Gerena en las calles de Sevilla.
