dc.description.abstract | At present due to the mass movement of private cars, the bus has, in general, low levels of
acceptance. The services are usually not very reliable, punctual and safe. Public authorities are
generally inclined to very expensive transport like the Metro. It has been shown that it is possible to find a middle point between the poor service and
disproportionate investments, unfeasible for many municipalities: the BRT "Bus Rapid Transit",
which is capable of providing high quality services, similar to the Metro, at just a fraction of the
cost. One advantage of BRT systems is that generally do not require subsidies.
The physical separation of the lane where the bus drives from the rest of the traffic is the
biggest difference between the concepts of "segregated corridor" and "bus lane". Bus lanes
are separated by horizontal lines on the pavement and the segregated corridors are separated
by a physical separation of cement curbs. Bus lanes often fail for the lack of control in
preventing the traffic invading it.
Segregated corridors cross the intersections by traffic lights, which can greatly reduce system
capacity. The segregated corridors at different levels avoid such conflicts being constructed so
that the bus lanes are completely separated from other traffic. Given the savings in time and
reduced congestion obtained at these intersections by these works, the payback period of this
investments is quite short.
In general, intelligent transport systems (ITS) can improve the efficiency of the system
significantly. With the gradual decrease in the cost of such systems, the cities of developing
countries should consider whether they can re‐install them as they are essential to achieve
higher speeds in the system | es |
