La nueva frontera de la expansión castellana en el Nuevo Mundo se inaugura en las Antillas y especialmente en la isla Española (Santo Domingo): el microcosmos de la historia americana, con palabras de Chaunu. El puerto de Santo Domingo, –“la ciudad primada de las Indias”– desempeñó un papel privilegiado no sólo como central del gobierno colonial, también como testigo exclusivo y centro de irradiación de cuantas empresas exploradoras y colonizadoras se proyectaron, primero en el Caribe, y luego en el continente americano. Repasamos en estas páginas los primeros años de la presencia española en Santo Domingo durante el reinado de los Reyes Católicos. El regreso de Fernando a Castilla en 1507 provocará la caída de Nicolás de Ovando, el gobernador de la isla, y con ella el fracaso de un régimen señorial que ponía en peligro el proyecto monárquico. Fernando’s return to Castilla in 1507 will casue the fall of Nicolás de Ovando, the governor of the island and with it the failure of a feudal regime that endangered the monarchical project. |
