Abstract | Introducción: La malaria es una parasitosis causada por el protozoo Plasmodium sp. y transmitida por el mosquito del género Anopheles. Introducción: La malaria es una parasitosis causada por el protozoo Plasmodium sp. y transmitida por el mosquito del género Anopheles. Se distribuye por las zonas tropicales de Asia, América y Áft-ica. Seg(m la OMS, es la enfermedad que mayor nCtmero de muertes produce y que mayor impacto económico presenta. En los fármacos de síntesis utilizados actualmente se incrementan cada vez más las resistencias y reacciones advet-sas severas. Las evidencias científicas y de uso tradicional nos indican que las plantas medicinales pueden ofrecer una alternativa o complemento eficaz y seguro para el tratamiento antipalúdico. Objetivos: Conocer las evidencias científicas que existen de las plantas utilizadas contra la malaria, seleccionar las especies que puedan utilizarse como hetTamientas terapéuticas e identificar las que necesiten una validación mayor, e investigar y valorar la composición de dos fitopreparados antirnaláricos que elaiJora y utiliza la ONG Phytosalus: PRADIL y MALARIA. Metodología: Las !Jases de datos científicas PubMed, Scopus, Scielo y Lilacs, así como páginas web, manuales, documentos técnicos y monografías han sido empleadas para la búsqueda de información. Resultados: Las plantas seleccionadas con mayor evidencia científica, estudios farmacológicos y conocimiento de su mecanismo de acción son Artemisia annua, Eurycoma longifolia , Stephania rotunda, Spilanthes acmel/a, Ouassia amara, Cinchona officinalis, Solanum nudum, Cryptolepis sanguinolenta y Oicoma tomentosa. Por otra parte, las especies que componen PRADIL presentan buena actividad en los ensayos farmacológicos revisados. Conclusiones: La especie medicinal que presenta mayor información sobre su eficacia y seguridad es Artemisia annua. Las plantas medicinales del fitopreparado PRADIL presentan, con los datos preclínicos disponibles, una demostrada actividad y ausencia de toxicidad. Por todo ello es necesario e importante la realización de investigaciones más profundas preclínicas y clínicas para poder validar el uso de estas especies y de PRADIL en el tratamiento de la malaria. |
