Abstract | La lente escleral es una lente de contacto gas permeable que apoya únicamente en
“esclera”. Actualmente se utiliza para compensar patologías que cursan con
irregularidad corneal (ectasias corneales, ectasias tras cirugía ... La lente escleral es una lente de contacto gas permeable que apoya únicamente en “esclera”. Actualmente se utiliza para compensar patologías que cursan con irregularidad corneal (ectasias corneales, ectasias tras cirugía refractiva, trasplantes de córnea), pero sus características nos lleva a plantearnos que puede ser útil como tratamiento de la sequedad ocular. Se ha realizado una revisión bibliográfica para valorar la efectividad de la lente de contacto escleral como tratamiento de la sequedad ocular, considerando la influencia del diseño y el material de la lente así como la etiología del ojo seco. Mediante una búsqueda en PubMed, Medline y Scopus, se obtuvieron 14 artículos. En todos ellos, se constata la efectividad de las lentes esclerales en este tipo de patología, independientemente de la etiología. No se refleja limitación, en cuanto a la edad, pudiendo utilizarse incluso en pacientes pediátricos (donde la efectividad es similar). También observamos que los modelos de lentes esclerales con DK alto, tienen mayor porcentaje de éxito, es decir mayor calidad de vida, mejora de la agudeza visual, mayor comodidad y mejora del epitelio corneal. Las complicaciones publicadas son escasas, y basadas en queratitis microbianas. Por tanto, en base a esta revisión podemos afirmar que las lentes de contacto esclerales son un tratamiento alternativo en el ojo seco, tanto en adultos como en la población pediátrica. |
