The Canterbury Tales are in many ways an editorial construction that started in the 15th century and still continues; besides some of the tales have provided the basic material for our ... Due to its fragmentary nature The Canterbury Tales are in many ways an editorial construction that started in the 15th century and still continues; besides some of the tales have provided the basic material for our contemporary view of medieval sexuality. In spite of its present day prominence in the critical reception of the text, sexuality in the tales seems to lose relevance at a closer look, as its presence seems to be congenial on the consecution of social satire. This paper argues that sex walks hand in hand with laughter as a means to achieve this didactic purpose; and it explores how sex and love help to establish a series of thematic lines around the joys and woes of marriage life. This motif allows a dialogic relationship between traditional views of genre and social relations and less conventional attitudes that seem to promote mutuality between the spouses |
