From the point of view of Cultural Studies and from a constructivist and interpretative perspective (Potter, 1999), this paper proposes an applied analysis of how boys and girls take on media discourses both as creative individuals and as social subjects. The research summarized here (Aran, 2008 – First Prize in the 2009 Awards in Research in audiovisual communication, CAC) focuses on the analysis of children’s interpretation of fictional violence, starting from the case study of two television texts / sequences broadcast in children’s programs with the presence of violence and based on the interpretative procedures carried out by a group of 16 boys and girls in elementary school (7 and 12 year olds) in two schools in Barcelona. Our perspective understands television images as a complex text which goes from an initial meaning and the expectations projected by the author/producer to the final interpretation made by the viewer. Media education permits us to approach critically those “cultural matrices of interpretation” (Bélisle, 1999) which are activated in television viewers and which respond both to the personal filters that each research subject projects and to their family styles and habits of television consumption. The in-depth interviews carried out with the subjects offer results of a qualitative nature about the processes of construction of meanings which boys and girls in the study activate from two different processes: from emotion and from comprehension (Moscovici, 1976). It is specifically the use of a limited number of cases which permits us to advance both in the narrative analysis of the interviews as well as in the analysis of the factual stratum, bringing us to understand the context from which each subject speaks to us. Starting from the “methodology of listening” (Glasnner y Loughlin, 1987) we can understand the construction of sense and meaning of the communicative act and the uses derived from the viewer’s reception, as well as identify the principal variables which intervene in children’s reception. Among others, ideas such as “violence of proximity” are raised. Media education emerges here as a powerful instrument for analyzing the social imaginary and for reflecting on the ability to renegotiate meaning on the part of young viewers. Thus, adapting the idea of Lledó (1998:39), we argue that culture – and media culture too – is, above all, our opportunity to do something with the culture.es
