Una revisión de las fuentes históricas que mencionan el Athenaeum de Roma

Abstract

En el presente trabajo se propone unanálisis cronológico de todas las fuentes históricas que nombran el Athenaeum de Adriano desde el siglo II d.C. hasta el siglo V, en una tentativa de conocer el funcionamiento de dicha institución, que debió ser el principal centro de la educación superior en la ciudad de Roma, algo que puede verse reflejado en el desarrollo de la Segunda Sofística a partir de finales del siglo II, momento en el que el Imperio se erigió en una suerte de mecenas del mundo intelectual que atrajo a los mejores eruditos desde Atenas al Athenaeum de Roma.

In the present study we propose a chronological analysis of all historical sources that name the Athenaeum of Hadrian since the second century A.D. to the fifth century, in an attempt to understand the functions of the institution, which must be the main centre of higher education in the city of Rome. This fact was reflected in the development of the Second Sophistic since the late second century AD, when the Roman Empire became a sort of patron of the intellectual world that attracted the best brains from the Athens Academy to the Athenaeum in Rome.
