Encuentros con la infraestrucura. El cajon ferroviario de Sants y el Borough Market de Southwark

Abstract

Las diferentes formas de construcción de la ciudad y sus escenarios ya consolidados a veces confluyen en momentos y lugares no planeados. Distintas historias se intersecan produciendo un problema de compatibilidad. La solución al conflicto genera a veces relaciones sorprendentes, resultado del cruce entre piezas de origen dispar. El caso del cajón ferroviario de Sants en Barcelona y el Borough Market de Londres son dos claros ejemplos de estos encuentros obligados entre arquitectura e infraestructura de la ciudad. Hoy en día son una muestra de los paisajes que pueden llegar a generarse en este tipo de intersecciones. Con una mirada apoyada en la historia, se entiende que la tendencia actual debe aprovecharse de las cualidades que aporta la infraestructura para proyectar el encuentro entre los distintos relatos que construyen la ciudad, buscando nuevos hilos argumentales que doten de un nuevo sentido el pasado, presente y futuro del entorno en el que vivimos.

Occasionally, the different forms of construction in the city and its consolidated scenarios converge at unplanned times and places. Different histories intersect, giving rise to a compatibility problem. Sometimes, the solution to the conflict produces surprising relationships, generated by the interaction between elements from very different origins. The case of the Sants rail corridor and the Borough Market of London are two clear examples of these forced encounters between architecture and city infrastructure. Today, they are examples of the type of landscape that can be created at such intersections. When seen from a historic viewpoint, it is understood that the current trend must leverage the qualities provided by the infrastructure to design the encounter between the different stories that make up the city, seeking new story lines that can give new meaning to the past, present and future of the environment in which we live.
