El presente estudio refleja la enfermedad periodontal y las necesidades de tratamiento entre 182 discapacitados psíquicos adultos residentes en una institución. Los resultados indicaban que este grupo especial tenía una elevada prevalencia de bosas moderadas y profundas (40%). Sólo el 10% de los pacientes presentaban salud periodontal. La relación entre severidad de la periodontitis y sexo era significativa, mostrando que las mujers tenían mayor destrucción periodontal que los hombres. La proporción de salud periodontal (código 0) y gingivitis (código 1) descendía con la edad, mientras que el número medio de sextantes exlcuidos aumentaba con ella. La prevalencia de bolsas moderadas y profundas era más elevada en los pacientes con mayor retraso mental. Era esencial la promoción de la higiene oral y tratamiento periodontal prácticamente en el 90% de los pacientes. These data indicate that this special group has a high prevalence of shallow and deep pockets (40%). However, only 10% of population study was periodontally health. The relationship between sex and severity of periodontitis was significant, females were a most periodontal breakdown that males. The rate of periodontal health (score 0) and gingivitis (score 1) were decreased with age, but the mean number of excluded sextants was increased with age. The prevalence of shallow and deep pockets were most frequent among handicapped with a high degree of mental retardation. It was essential the improvement in the oral hygiene and periodontal care among about 90% of the sample. |
