Sobre la inscripción latina Nº 4625 del Museo de Cádiz y el gladiador griego llamado germanvs

Abstract

El Museo de Cádiz conserva el epitafio latino de un gladiador griego llamado “Germanus” (siglo i d.C.), en el que llama la atención la aparente contradicción entre el nombre y el origen del gladiador. En este artículo se revisa la bibliografía sobre esta inscripción y la incoherencia del nombre: algunos datos (recogidos aquí por el autor y puestos en relación por primera vez con el epitafio) revelan cuál es la mejor explicación para ese llamativo nombre de “Germanus”.

The “Museo de Cádiz” houses the Latin epitaph of a Greek gladiator called “Germanus” (Ist Century B.C.). It is remarkable the apparent contradiction between the name and the birth-place of the gladiator. In this article, it is reviewed the bibliography about the inscription and the incoherence of the name: some data (here collected by the author and put in relation to the epitaph for the first time) indicates which is the most acceptable explanation for that special name of “Germanus”.
