This article attempts to provide insights about concepts of political representation developed by Spanish liberalism during the middle of the Nineteenth Century. The analysis of parliamentary discourse and publications regarding electoral legislation allows us to understand the cultural climate and organisational necessities that influenced the formulation of liberalism representative models in the post-revolutionary era. The political capacity of electors and candidates, the influences considered legitimate and necessary, and the implementation of the right to vote along with the institutions deemed to command and to channel it, are the three components that determine the concept of representation in liberal discourse. |
