Frontón Recoletos: la construcción de la metáfora

Abstract

El artículo analiza una de las obras más brillantes del ingeniero español Eduardo Torroja: el Frontón Recoletos, construido en Madrid durante el año 1935 en colaboración con el arquitecto Secundino Zuazo. Su gran espacio interior, marcado por el volteo de la lámina cilíndrica de la cubierta y por las líneas horizontales y dinámicas de sus gradas en vuelo, permite situar la obra en una posición privilegiada dentro del panorama arquitectónico de la época: el frontón simboliza el nuevo lenguaje del hormigón armado y las cualidades que éste tenía para formalizar las necesidades arquitectónicas de la sociedad moderna. El movimiento, la velocidad o el dinamismo son atributos que comparten tanto la máquina moderna como el tradicional juego de la pelota vasca, y que Torroja pone de manifiesto en la forma gestual de sus estructuras. Por lo tanto, el presente texto bucea en el diseño y la ejecución del Frontón, así como en la actitud de Eduardo Torroja, para descubrir la relación existente entre construcción-forma-expresión; y en esa misma línea se tienden puentes a experiencias de otros maestros anteriores y posteriores a Torroja, donde resulta especialmente importante la relación personal y de mutua admiración que mantuvo con Frank Lloyd Wright.

The article analyses one of the most ingenious works of the Spanish Engineer, Eduardo Torroja; the Frontón Recoletos, constructed in Madrid during 1935 in collaboration with the architect Secundino Zuazo. Its large interior space, marked by the curve of the cylindrical sheet of the roof and by the horizontal and dynamic lines of its flying seating tiers, place the work in a privileged position within the architectural panorama of the time. The Frontón symbolises the new language of reinforced concrete and its qualities, which formalised the architectural needs of modern society. Movement, speed and dynamism are attributes shared by both the modern machine and the traditional Basque ball game, and which Torroja represented gesturally in his structures. Therefore, this text delves into the design and execution of the Frontón, and also into the attitude of Eduardo Torroja, to discover the relationship existing between construction, form and expression. Along the same lines there are bridges to the experiences of other masters, before and after Torroja, where the personal and mutually admiring relationship he had with Frank Lloyd Wright is especially important.
