Abstract | Un gran número de procesos en sistemas con muchos electrones dependen de las interacciones que ocurren en un pequeño grupo de electrones y núcleos, el grupo activo o clúster, mientras que el resto del sistema puede tratarse ... Un gran número de procesos en sistemas con muchos electrones dependen de las interacciones que ocurren en un pequeño grupo de electrones y núcleos, el grupo activo o clúster, mientras que el resto del sistema puede tratarse como un entorno espectador. Las interaccion es en el grupo activo dan lugar a estados localizados cuya descripción es el objetivo de los métodos de clúster inmerso. La mayoría de estos métodos se basan en dos ideas: 1) La separabilidad entre el clúster y el entorno y 2) Una descripción conocida a priori de entorno que, en buena aproximación, puede considerarse congelado. La primera de estas ideas es el origen de la Teoría de la Separabilidad Electrónica y su formulación mecanocuántica por McWeeny y Kleiner, y Huzinaga y colaboradores. La segunda idea permite transformar esta teoría en métodos útiles para cálculos de clústers inmersos. Z. Barandiarán y L. Seijo fueron los pioneros en este tipo de métodos. Sus potenciales modelo de entorno ab initio es una herramienta útil para estudiar fenómenos locales tales como impurezas en cristales iónicos e interacciones molécula-superficie. Aunque ha establecido la base para desarrollos posteriores y ha llevado las fronteras más lejos, el método de los potenciales modelo de entorno ab initio presenta algunas limitaciones: 1) Puede representar entornos formados por grupos esféricos y 2) Estos grupos son capas cerradas, descritas por funciones de onda del Hartree-Fock restringidas.Han aparecido otros métodos que representan sistemas no esféricos por técnicas de Potenciales Modelo o relacionadas con ellos.
