dc.description.abstract | The commercial aviation sector has been experiencing sustained growth since the liberalisation
process began in the United States some fifty years ago. From the dominance of the large flag
carriers, commercial aviation has gone from being dominated worldwide to the emergence of a
variety of companies that, exploiting a variety of business models, have contributed to the boom
that lasted until the great tsunami of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This thesis is concerned with the analysis of airlines that apply the ULCC (ultra low-cost carrier)
model and is based on access to a series of public data at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT). Therefore, the focus of the paper is on a number of American ultra low-cost
airlines.
First, the context of the aeronautical sector dedicated to passenger transport is contextualised, and
the differences between LCC airlines and the most common airlines today, the low-cost airlines,
are explained. Considering the European scenario, VUELING or RYANAIR can be seen as low cost airlines, while WizzAIR, for example, would fit into the LCC type of airline.
Secondly, a methodology is designed to identify the operational ratios of the companies under
study: Spirit Airlines, Frontier Airlines and Allegiant Airlines. Therefore, for each of them, a set
of operational data is provided for the period from 2000 to 2020, the annual increase over this
period, the results of the key and comparative indices, and finally, a qualitative analysis of the
airlines, together with the identification of the problems that have arisen over the period.
Finally, this work concludes with the creation of a viewer that allows interaction with the data
collected and analyzed in this study. The viewer offers different screens that provide a detailed
understanding of the characteristics of the analyzed airlines. It also includes a qualitative analysis
and the annual identification of problems for each airline, along with a variety of graphs
showcasing the most representative data. In this way, the evolution of the ULCC business model
of American airlines is interactively reflected.
americanas. | es |
