Objectives: To determine whether the presence of certain habits increases the prevalence of early childhood caries, identifying the risk factors associated with this pathology. Method: An observational analytical study of cases and controls was carried out, with the participation of 42 children aged 29 to 71 months. For the collection of information we used a survey validated by experts and the cod index using the WHO oral health assessment form. For the analysis of the data obtained, descriptive statistics and cross-tabulation techniques were applied using the SPSS programme. Results: The prevalence of caries in our study population is very high (81.95%) and the cod index is 4. There is a statistically significant association between the cod index and allergies, the highest level of education of the father, the sucking of a dummy impregnated with substances containing abundant sugars and the use of toothpaste by the main caregiver. Conclusion: Knowledge of the specific aetiological factors of early childhood caries in an individual is essential for effective caries prevention and stabilisation. Further research with larger sample sizes is needed to obtain statistically significant results. |
