Nuevos modos de hacer memoria. Las imágenes asturianas de David Seymour ‘Chim’ durante la Guerra Civil española

Abstract

Ya desde inicios del siglo XX, los periodos de guerra supusieron un foco de atención para las incursiones fotográficas en la prensa. Desde entonces, el estudio de estas imágenes depende del análisis crítico a la supuesta objetividad fotográfica, los intereses político-sociales de cada toma, la relación de cercanía entre el hecho a cubrir y el fotógrafo, etcétera. En este sentido, el primer conflicto no internacional que suscitó un gran interés para periódicos y fotoperiodistas extranjeros fue la Guerra Civil española. A partir de aquí, el siguiente artículo explora los reportajes gráficos realizados por el fotógrafo polaco David Seymour, alias ‘Chim’ en su paso por la región asturiana en los primeros meses de 1937. El trabajo forma parte, a su vez, del valioso conjunto visual al que denominamos “Maleta” o “Valija mexicana”, junto con los negativos de André Friedmann (Robert Capa) y Gerta Pohorylle (Gerda Taro). En concreto, nos concentramos a las imágenes de la batalla de Oviedo, semi-inéditas en la actualidad al no gozar de un análisis en profundidad en comparación las dedicadas a otras localidades, sobre las que se han realizado estudios y exposiciones museísticas. Su estudio parte de una metodología basada en la identificación espacio-temporal de la toma, a partir de la que situar al fotógrafo e iniciar el comentario fotográfico a la luz del contexto histórico inmediato.

Since the beginning of the 20th century, periods of war were a focus of attention for photographic incursions in the press. Since then, the study of these images depends on the critical analysis of the supposed photographic objectivity, the political-social interests of each shot, the close relationship between the event to be covered and the photographer, etc. In this sense, the first non-international conflict that aroused great interest for foreign newspapers and photojournalists was the Spanish Civil War. From here, the following article explores the graphic reports made by the Polish photographer David Seymour, alias ‘Chim’ during his time in the Asturian region in the first months of 1937. The work is part, in turn, of the valuable set visual which we call “Suitcase” or “Mexican Suitcase”, along with the negatives of André Friedmann (Robert Capa) and Gerta Pohorylle (Gerda Taro). Specifically, we focus on the images of the battle of Oviedo, currently semi-unpublished as they do not have an in-depth analysis compared to those dedicated to other locations, on which studies and museum exhibitions have been carried out. His study is based on a methodology based on the spatio-temporal identification of the shot, from which, situate the photographer and begin the photographic commentary in light of the immediate historical context.
