Charles Clifford: un fotógrafo británico en la Sevilla de los duques de Montpensier

Abstract

En este trabajo se investiga en las noticias y en los anuncios publicados en una selección de la prensa española de la década de 1850 con el objetivo de rastrear la huella del fotógrafo británico Charles Clifford durante sus dos primeros viajes a Sevilla, en la primavera de 1854 y en el verano de 1859. En las páginas que siguen se indaga y se teoriza, mediante hipótesis y tesis, sobre las motivaciones y los intereses que lo llevaron a desplazarse a la capital hispalense con más frecuencia que a cualquier otra ciudad española, así como en las correlaciones con otras visitas a Andalucía de personalidades de su tiempo y artistas de su pasado.

In this work we examine the news and advertisements published in a selection of the Spanish pressin the 1850s, with the aim of tracing the British photographer Charles Clifford during his first twotrips to Seville, in the spring of 1854 and the summer of 1859. The following pages investigate andtheorise, through hypotheses and theses, about motivations and interest that led him to travel to Seville more frequently than to any other Spanish city, as well as correlations with other visits to Andalusia by personalities of his time and artists of his past.
