The Final Degree Project (TFG) entitled "Between oblivion and neglect. Living with Alzheimer's disease in the Sierra Suroeste de Extremadura" tries to give voice to issues that are invisible in the agenda of traditional media such as Alzheimer's and the rural world. This neurodegenerative disease that blurs the memories and identity of the affected person demands to become a priority and occupy a prominent place in the political agenda. An aging population and increased life expectancy is associated with more cases of dementia, reflecting the need for policy strategies that allocate funds to Alzheimer's research, as well as resources for people with the disease and their families. This report reveals the difficulty of living with Alzheimer's, especially when there are no resources to cope with the disease. This is the case of the Sierra Suroeste region in Extremadura, where there are hardly any means to meet the needs of people with Alzheimer's and their families. Through the testimonies of professionals, politicians and especially the story of family members who have lived and live with the disease, the aim is to bring this story to the eyes of the public to raise social awareness, highlight the importance of solidarity in this situation and measure the need for resources that exists in rural areas. |
