Paisajes arquitectónicos y memorias de la ciudad

Abstract

La ciudad occidental se ha concebido, desde sus orígenes, como una sucesión de llenos y vacíos. La presencia de esos vacíos, no ocupados por edificios, ha permitido la construcción de paisajes arquitectónicos, configurando el carácter ambiental de las ciudades y “ampliando” su morfología y su memoria. Desde la ciudad antigua hasta la contemporánea, estos vacíos construidos se han convertido en espacios significativos, más allá de un uso o una función concretos. En este tiempo que vivimos, estos paisajes, que refuerzan los mecanismos de las memorias de las ciudades, son más necesarios que nunca. Para ejemplificar este proceso se han elegido paisajes arquitectónicos estrechamente vinculados a las memorias de tres ciudades: París, Nueva York y Roma.

The western city was conceived, from its origins, as a succession of full and empty spaces. The presence of those voids, unoccupied by buildings, permitted the construction of architectural landscapes, shaping the environmental character of cities and “expanding” their morphology and their memory. From the ancient city until those of today, these constructed voids have become significant spaces, beyond any specific use or function. In the times we live in, these landscapes, which reinforce the mechanisms of the cities’ memories, are needed more than ever. To illustrate this process, we have selected architectural landscapes that are closely related to the memories of three cities: Paris, New York, and Rome.
