This paper fits within the restitution of the so-called “negative emotions” by the current aesthetics; specifically, disgust, disregarded in modern aesthetics due to its excessive bodily nature and its scant thoughtful dimension. The study of this emotion is undertaken here with the help of a kind of image, undervalued in the aesthetics field too, because of its unsuitability to the Kantian notion of disinterest, as the documentary or press photograph. The image in question is Kitchen table, by Sergei Ilnitsky, the winner of the World Press Photo in 2015. The analyzing of this war image from its revolting experience –because there are remains of blood and dirt in it- allows us to realize that our skin and superficial feeling is, in fact, the means to figure out its deep moral and political content. |
