Catherine Weldom: la mujer que caminaba por delante

Abstract

La película Woman walks ahead (Susanna White, 2017) cuenta la historia de Catherine Weldon, una mujer cuyo mayor testimonio son los cuatro retratos del jefe de los Sioux Lakota, Toro Sentado. Adscrita al western, presenta la especial circunstancia de tratar un tema tan extraño al género como la pintura, fundiéndolo con la temática revisionista y la situación social de la mujer en la época. Ese especial carácter se hace notar en cada uno de los elementos que conforman la producción los cuales, no dejando de ser fieles al western, adquieren un simbolismo estético y emocional centrado en la protagonista. Este trabajo se propone analizar desde el punto de vista cinematográfico y artístico los diferentes componentes de una producción totalmente centrada en la única mujer pintora del Viejo Oeste que ha tenido el honor de pasar a la gran pantalla.

The film Woman Walks Ahead (Susanna White, 2017), tells the story of Chaterine Weldon, the woman whose greatest testimony is the four portraits of Sitting Bull, chief of the Lakota Sioux. Belonging to Westerns, the film addresses a theme as strange to the genre as painting, merging it with a revisionist subplot and with the social situation of women in the period. This special treatment is in every single detail of the film which, keeping loyal to the Western genre, has principally an aesthetic and emotional symbolism focused on the female protagonist. This work aims to analyze, from the cinematographic and artistic point of view, a film totally centered on the only woman painter from the Old West who has have the honor to have her own movie.
