The film Woman Walks Ahead (Susanna White, 2017), tells the story of Chaterine Weldon, the woman whose greatest testimony is the four portraits of Sitting Bull, chief of the Lakota Sioux. Belonging to Westerns, the film addresses a theme as strange to the genre as painting, merging it with a revisionist subplot and with the social situation of women in the period. This special treatment is in every single detail of the film which, keeping loyal to the Western genre, has principally an aesthetic and emotional symbolism focused on the female protagonist. This work aims to analyze, from the cinematographic and artistic point of view, a film totally centered on the only woman painter from the Old West who has have the honor to have her own movie. |
