This article presents and contextualizes two manuscripts belonging to the prologue tradition that Juan Páez de Castro wrote around Ulyxea, a 16th century translation of Odisea by Gonzalo Pérez. The two manuscripts, comingfrom the Princeton University Library and the British Library, are, respectively, the hadwritten original of two of the versions that Páez wrote about the prologue and sent to Pérez and a 16th century copy of one of those versions, this second one transmitted together with the Dialogue of the language by Juan de Valdés. We will contextualize and collate the new testimonies located and thus reconstruct the complete textual history of the prologue; we will postulate the existence of three different versions with derived descripti. The article also includes the tracing of the present location of a codex of the Royal Library with materials by Paez de Castro. |
