Nuevo retrato de Calígula procedente de Córdoba

Abstract

En este trabajo se analiza un retrato procedente de Córdoba y que hoy se expone en la Gliptoteca de Múnich; se trata de una cabeza mayor que el natural, de muy buena factura técnica y cuyas características nos indican que representó al emperador Calígula, aunque cuenta con algunos elementos fisiognómicos vinculables a su predecesor en el trono, Tiberio; la pieza lleva la corona cívica, lo que le otorga un carácter marcadamente ideal. Su origen debió de ser alguno de los recintos oficiales de la Córdoba romana hasta que tras el asesinato del emperador se llevó a un ámbito privado para evitar su destrucción.

In this work a portrait from Córdoba is analyzed which is now exhibited in the Glyptothek in Munich. It is a head larger than the natural one, of very good technical workmanship and whose characteristics indicate that it represented the Emperor Caligula, although it has some physiognomic elements linked to his predecessor on the throne, Tiberius; the piece bears the civic crown which gives it a markedly ideal character. Its origin must have been one of the official precincts of Roman Cordoba until after the assassination of the emperor, time in wich it was taken to a private area to prevent its destruction.
